I’m a Benficista at heart. I haven’t watched more than one of their games since I left Portugal, but I’m still a Sport Lisboa e Benfica (SLB) fan in my soul and spirit. Likewise I’m also a Sporting hater. Their green stripes, the color of their stadium seats that are made to look like the stadium is full when indeed they can’t pay people to watch their pathetic team lose (honestly I don’t really know what I’m talking about).
And now Benfica is coming to America. Not to play here, but to purchase a future star. Freddy Adu is now going to be playing at the Stadio Do Luz only minutes from my old home in the ghetto of Amadora. I hope he succeeds.
If you haven’t heard of him try a simple youtube search. He started playing for the MLS (Americas soccer league) when he was 16. The hopes of the MLS were on him, and…well…he failed. He’s now 18 and we’ve moved on to Beks instead. But the potential is still there and he will undoubtedly be a great player.

Jardel? Fogo! Ele sucks!Ok, so I'm all for Benfica getting Adu. Great, awesome, wowie zowie. But, what the heck is MLS thinking?! Here they pay millions to import an old European dood (beckham), but they won't shell out the cash to guard one of America's own?If MLS wants to succeed they need to stop trying to mirror pansie european football. Yes, I love SLB, but you have to admit that european style soccer is not going to work in the US. We don't like weiner babies grabbing their shins and whining for a call.Likewise, MLS needs to hang on to the few stars they have that non-soccer nuts might actually recognize. They need to stop calling their clubs things that don't make sense in American (FC Dallas? Its not even football over here). And they need to stop importing european guys at the end of their career.Ok, done. Wait, one more thing… Glorioso SLB! Viva Pantera Negra!
