Orlando

Well, I’m off to beautiful sunny Orlando, Florida in about two hours! The last time I was in Orlando it was to go to Disneyworld. I was an acne covered, scrawny, and somewhat handsome fifteen year old.

This time around, however, there will be no six foot mice greeting me. Instead I’m on my way to the Exponential Conference to hear some of the greatest speakers in church planting from around the globe (speaking of globes, I really wanted to buy one at Goodwill the other day). I’m looking for any and every way that I can grow myself into a better leader and a more healthy church planter.

Pray for the trip, but most of all please pray for Jess as she’s going to be home with both kids, babysitting another, dog sitting, speaking at church, hosting our home community, going to math class 5 days a week, and saving the world all while I’m gone! Jess and I work as partners, as a team in nearly everything we do, so it’s hard to go to such an exciting event without her. It just doesn’t seem right.

I’ll try to update often while I’m there. Peace out friends.

Post Modern Thought

I found my son climbing on top of his play kitchen just a few minutes ago. He’s got a climbing structure in his play area for climbing and is not supposed to climb on his other stuff. I asked him if he thought that it was a good choice to climb on his play kitchen and he responded:

Daddy, daddy, dad, dad, I’ve thought about this and I’ve decided that this is a good choice for me. It’s a good choice for me, but it’s not a good choice for you. Maybe its not a good idea for you, but it is for me.

If you’re familiar with the discussion on post modernity and the post modern way of thought, you’d be happy (or grieved) to see that my son apparently is the epitome of today’s generation.

My Movie

I’ve decided I’m going to write a movie. I’ve been thinking about it a lot, the idea came to me in the shower this morning and I just can’t seem to shake it. When something hits your brain this hard you know its from God or from somewhere else. Ok, picture this, it’s a sci fi futuristic thriller where you can never exactly tell what’s a dream and what’s reality. So are you ready for the name and the tag line?

Sometimes you can’t really tell the difference between a nightmare and reality. And when your nightmare becomes reality it really scares you like a really bad nightmare. Welcome to NightScape.

Grappling with the Ordered Death of Men, Women, and Children

Have you read the Old Testament before? You should. It’s weird. It’s disturbing. It’s confusing. It’s generally a good read.
I’ve got to be honest, though, as a minister, a college graduate, and avid reader, I’ve got little understanding as to how to contextualize the Old Testament.
One thing is for certain, it makes me angry when people over simplify it. When they take horrific stories of the commanded death of women and children, stoning of people for seemingly insignificant things, and lack of justice concerning the plight of certain people groups and try to justify it with a Sunday school answer it makes me frustrated. That answer works at church, but if you claimed that God commanded you to kill all the men, women, children, and animals of Kazakhstan I don’t think I’d be speaking of God’s grace or mercy (no matter how true it is). It’s not that simple.
I’m grappling with my understanding and explanation (for lack of a better term). Have you thought through this? Have you grappled with this? Have you questioned Christians concerning this?
I won’t give my thought out response here because I’m not sure I can. I will say, however, that I love Jesus. And I believe that in Jesus we see the most clear and understandable picture of God’s identity. This brings me great peace…and a little more convolution.
